The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) is an initiative by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) which is the independent statistics, research, and evaluation arm of the United States Department of Education. WWC estimates the effectiveness of programs by evaluating the quality and quantity of evidence for that program.

This week’s blog post is about the evidence behind Fast Track: Elementary School’s impact on students. Here’s the short version:

Fast Track: Elementary School is a comprehensive intervention program designed to reduce conduct problems and promote academic, behavioral, and social improvement. Prior to grade 1, students are identified as being at risk for long-term antisocial behavior through teacher and parent reports of conduct problems. Delivery of the program begins in grade 1 and continues through grade 10

The evidence for Fast Track: Elementary School covers students in kindergarten.

The outcomes examined include: emotional/internal behavior, external behavior, reading achievement, and social outcomes. Here’s what the evidence suggests about Fast Track: Elementary School’s impact on each outcome:

  • Emotional/internal behavior: Positive impact (an average student would be expected to improve by 9 percentile points)
  • External behavior: Positive impact (an average student would be expected to improve by 4 percentile points)
  • Reading achievement: Positive impact (an average student would be expected to improve by 8 percentile points)
  • Social outcomes: Positive impact (an average student would be expected to improve by 4 percentile points)

The studies looking into Fast Track: Elementary School had student samples that were in urban and rural areas in Washington, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and North Carolian, had students who were White and Black, and were male and female.
